The Western Slope is all too familiar with wildfires. Even in non-drought years, wildfires are a perennial threat to our neighbors.
Last year, as wildfires broke out in Meeker and Craig and forced residents to evacuate, Food Bank of the Rockies ensured people were nourished through a mobile pantry that provided emergency food and water to displaced individuals, families, and older adults.
This year, with threats of wildfires looming after an especially dry winter, Food Bank of the Rockies is preparing emergency food bags in advance so we can immediately respond when and where we are needed.
On May 14, Keller Williams employees pitched in to help pack 250 bags with shelf-stable foods, which will be stored and distributed by the Food Bank to residents impacted by potential wildfires or other emergencies. The day was recognized as Red Day, a company-wide annual day of service for Keller Williams.
The bags are designed for emergency situations when people may not have access to electricity or cooking facilities.
“You never know what people’s situation might be,” said Amber Henning, Director of Development and Community Relations. “These food bags are designed to really meet those needs in an emergency situation so that individuals can get the nutrition that they need but also focus on the other things that are happening in their world at that time.”
Emergency preparedness and other efforts like these are part of Food Bank of the Rockies’ broader commitment to ensuring our Western Slope neighbors know they are not alone when they need food support. While we respond quickly during emergencies, we also work year-round, distributing nutritious and familiar food to our Western Slope neighbors facing hunger through mobile pantries and a network of Hunger Relief Partners. Together, with the support of our community, these efforts help ensure our neighbors have reliable access to the food they need whenever and wherever hunger rises.
