Food for Health Program Helps Neighbors Focus on Healing

Adam and Hannah opening a box in a kitchen

The Food for Health Program started in 2022 with the goal of connecting people experiencing food insecurity and chronic health issues with nutrient-dense, medically tailored food. Medical professionals at 19 partner locations in Colorado refer patients who demonstrate a need for stable nutritional support. Since the program began, more than 2,000 people have participated in the program.

This past year, Food Bank of the Rockies began partnering with Project Angel Heart with the goal of improving healthcare outcomes for patients collaboratively rather than independently. Through this program, Food Bank of the Rockies delivers food boxes to referred individuals for 12 weeks.

“Being in and out of the hospital all last year, it felt awful, it felt like I was powerless, and that there was nothing I could do to take care of my family,” said Adam, who began receiving food boxes from Food Bank of the Rockies last fall after repeatedly experiencing infections as he was trying to heal. “The food bank helping to take up that slack really allowed me to focus on healing.”

“They didn’t make us jump through hoops,” said Adam’s wife, Hannah, speaking about Food Bank of the Rockies and Project Angel Heart. “There’s not 16 extra hoops, or a monthly hoop that you need to jump through on to of your school and on top of work.”

Special thanks to Colorado Access, Kaiser Permanente, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Bank of America, Intermountain Health, City of Commerce City, DaVita, CommonSpirit, and UCHealth for making the Food for Health program possible.
