A New Building, A Brighter Future

New food bank of the rockies distribution center shot with a drone, sunrise in the background.

After years of planning and stretching the capacity limits as far as they could go in our old distribution center, Food Bank of the Rockies opened the doors to our new Aurora distribution center in early February.

“After 19 years in a space we outgrew long ago, we’re thrilled to open a new hub designed to support our mission of nourishing people facing hunger with better food, stronger partnerships, and greater efficiency,” saidErin Pulling, President and CEO. “This isn’t just a building — it’s a foundation for reaching more neighbors with fresh, nutritious, familiar food, and for building a future where no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from.”

Our new 270,000-square-foot distribution center will enable us to:

  • Reduce operating costs by more than $500,000 annually by consolidating operations and investing in sustainability measures, allowing us to redistribute those funds to better support our Hunger Relief Partners and neighbors
  • Triple our cold storage capacity, allowing us to receive and safely distribute up to 50% more fresh produce and accept significantly more rescued food
  • Triple our capacity for volunteers, which means triple the impact on how much food we can process
  • Quadruple the number of meals for kids we can deliver to afterschool and summer programs
  • Expand our workforce development program

During our grand opening event, one supporter shared how deeply moved they were to learn how intentionally our teams source food — not simply based on availability, but on what neighbors actually prefer to eat. From culturally relevant staples to holiday favorites, food is chosen with dignity in mind. Another guest remarked that they hadn’t realized the scale of our work — or that our service area spans the entire state of Wyoming in addition to Colorado. That scale matters. One in eight people across our service area, including one in seven children, faces food insecurity.

This building is not just about square footage. It’s about strengthening our ability to respond when needs surge, innovating with our partners, and ensuring that every neighbor has access to nutritious and familiar food.
