WYOMING
FOOD BANK OF THE ROCKIES

Welcome Marguerite Meyer, WFBR's New Director

Marguerite started as the new WFBR Director July 14.  She has over twenty years experience with the national and international non-profit community.

Marguerite is passionately committed to serving and excited to share her expertise with Food Bank of the Rockies.  She comes "home" to Wyoming via non-profit work across the country and internationally, most recently in California.

Please welcome her to the FBR team and stop by the warehouse to say hello!

A Message From the Director

In reflecting on why I am so happy to be here a special word comes to mind: genuine. I was fortunate enough to ride along with Ms. Bonnie, the driver of our tractor-trailer last week. We made her usual bi-monthly run of the Sheridan-Buffalo-Thermopolis through Worland and back to Casper route. At our first drop off point in Sheridan, the volunteer asked if I was “the new recruit,” meaning Ms. Bonnie’s helper. I laughed and said, “Kinda sorta, I’m Marguerite.” His reply left me speechless. He replied, “Oh! We got your fax about the Conference, you’re the new director!” I was surprised to see excitement build so soon.

This gentleman, along with all the other agency representatives, were genuine in their appreciation for the food and assistance they receive from WFBR. It is not just the appreciation, it is the kind of genuineness you see in the face of an agency representative when you say, “We have some special extras. Would you like some?”  The faces of those I spoke to showed  the genuine relief of knowing that there is “something extra” in addition to their usual order for those they feed. These agencies know they could not feed those in need without our help.

Being a part of an organization that helps so many people across a wide geographic area humbles me and I am truly thankful to share in the ability to serve our agencies and their clients.

With gratitude,

Marguerite

“Participating in your "Eat Out to End Hunger Event" allows myself, my staff and my customers an opportunity to be reminded that real hunger still exists, even today. My customers can participate in helping alleviate hunger in a small way, by treating themselves with us on that day -- they are in turn also contributing to others that are truly hungry. It may even motivate some of us to continue to contribute additionally, in some manner. What you are asking of each restaurant owner in the state of Wyoming is a "very do-able donation", Huckleberry's Espresso by itself, is a mere drop in a bucket. However, it's the synergy behind all of us, plus our customer base, that has the power to truly effect and help eliminate Hunger in Wyoming. We plan to continue to promote and support your efforts.” – Pam Lesher, Huckleberry’s Espresso, Rawlins, Wyoming

Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen (or so) Donors

“Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen (or so) Donors” is a campaign for the hungry citizens of Wyoming with one goal – ensuring that all in need throughout our service area have enough to eat through continued food distribution. With a state-wide service area – 97,914 square miles – we move great quantities of food each month. And, as much as food is our business, transportation of that food is the only way we truly make a difference in the lives of our citizens who are hungry.

Roll on Eighteen Wheeler

Traveling the highways of Wyoming is nothing new for WFBR. Since we opened our doors in 2004, we have traveled nearly 170,000 miles and distributed over 7.2 million pounds of food to our partner hunger-relief agencies.

Keep on Truckin’

Thanks to the generosity of our long-time partners – the Daniels Fund and Kraft Foods, Inc. – a new truck arrived at WFBR in January. This incredible gift, along with a newly leased refrigerated trailer, means we have a RELIABLE mode of transportation for the food we distribute each month to 34 towns and cities across Wyoming.

Trick our Trailer

WFBR is offering the opportunity for individuals or businesses to partner with us to complete the purchase of our trailer. Our current lease provides us the option to buy after one year, with a portion of our lease monies credited to us for the purchase. We will complete our one year requirement in May 2008. Our hope is to raise the remaining funds to make this purchase and eliminate our monthly lease payment.

For a donation of $5,000, WFBR will print the individual name or business logo on the side of our trailer. Your donation will be recognized by all who see our truck as it travels the state on a monthly basis and your name will reflect your commitment to the betterment of our Wyoming communities. For more information, please contact WFBR at 877-265-2172 or 307-265-2172.

WYOMING FOOD BANK OF THE ROCKIES

In the area served by Wyoming Food Bank of the Rockies (WFBR) 53,000 people live in poverty and struggle to meet their basic food needs; 17,000 of them are children. Hunger is especially hard on children must have proper nutrition to grow and learn.

WFBR, an affiliate of America’s Second Harvest, the Nation’s Food Bank Network, has been distributing food and products to agencies serving Wyoming’s needy children, seniors, and families for 20 years from its headquarters in Denver.

To better serve the state, reach more rural areas, and increase support for agencies providing food assistance, WFBR opened a warehouse in Mills (near Casper) in October 2004.  From this facility, WFBR delivers food and essential household items to 34 cities and towns across the state every month.

Last year, WFBR distributed over 2 million pounds of food and essential items in Wyoming. That equals nearly one million meals for our less fortunate neighbors in need of a helping hand.

Last year, WFBR worked with more than 200 nonprofit hunger-relief programs that provide food and meals for the sick, needy, or ill across the state. From small church pantries to large organizations with national support, WFBR partners with programs to provide food and essential items to Wyoming's less fortunate individuals.
